The rise of a knowledge-based economy and society calls upon schools to produce a citizenry with collaborative and creative capabilities and other “21st century skills.” The Technology and Collaborative Creativity in Learning (TaCCL) Reseaerch Lab, directed by Dr. Jianwei Zhang at the University at Albany-SUNY, is dedicated to exploring new possiblities of engaging students in collaborative and creative knowledge work within and across disciplinary areas with the support of new technologies. Our current work focuses on:

  • Engaging student collective responsibility for evolving/refining knowledge-building processes that are essential to real-world knowledge communities.

  • Design and use of new learning environments (simulations, online communication, and knowledge representation tools) that help students work as dynamic teams to develop ideas and address increasing levels of complexities in various knowledge domains.

  • Principle-based pedagogical design and technology for supporting a classroom (or a network of classrooms) to work as a creative community, which embraces sustained idea advancement, progressive problem solving, dynamic collaboration, and transformative discourse.

  • Creating innovative communities among teachers, so they can understand and experience the dynamics of collaborative knowledge building and thus be better prepared to engage their students in the same processes.
